Program Overview
Escape Wisconsin winters with this meaningful and rewarding service learning program in rural Jamaica this January 2-12, 2014.  Students will work in the community of Hagley Gap, in the Blue Mountain region of Eastern Jamaica.

Service projects include three possible tracks:
1. Nursing and Health Education: Nursing and related health students will work in rural clinics and conduct community health outreach activities such as blood pressure and diabetes screening.
2. Education:  All students are invited to help by tutoring in rural schools, helping students prepare for college entrance exams, and other educational outreach activities.
3. Renewable Energy:  Students with background in electrical wiring, construction, engineering or renewable energy systems will work to install small-scale solar lighting systems at rural health clinics, conduct training for youth on renewable energy, and other projects such as construction of a solar dryer for coffee or other agricultural products.
Donkey

Students will learn about the geography, history, and culture of Jamaica and study how issues of energy, the environment, education and the economy in developing countries differ from those in the United States. During the study abroad service-learning experience, students will be engaged in hands-on service projects.

Course Information

This program will be a non-credit course for 2014 for Madison College students. Moraine Park Technical College will offer a one-credit course in International Study for their students. Students should work with faculty at MPTC for course information.

Accommodations and Meals

Lodging will be in local host families which allows you an up-close look at daily life in the community and an opportunity to make new friends.

Local placement and logistics will be handled by the Blue Mountain Project a non-profit organization dedicated to health, education, and sustainable development in the Hagley Gap region.

Excursions
Girls at School

In addition to the service activities, students will have the option to either participate in a hike to the peak of Blue Mountain itself (the highest peak in the Caribbean and located in a national park filled with tropical fauna and birds) or a day-trip to the ocean.  Additional activities will include events designed to help understand the local culture such as cooking lessons, farm tours, patois lessons and/or guest lectures on Jamaica history and culture.
