Program Overview

This semester-long program, which is administered by College of Lake County in Illinois, allows students to immerse themselves in Chinese language and culture. Students have the opportunity to live and study alongside Chinese and other international students.

Course Information

China Building- Amy Kue
Students earn 12-13 credits during this study abroad program. Study abroad participants are required to take “History of Chinese Culture and Society” (3 credits) and “Introduction to East Asian Civilization” (3 credits). Students then choose two courses taught in English from a pre-approved list. Additionally, students have the opportunity to take Chinese coursework.

All students accepted into a semester-long Study Abroad program are required to take the Madison College one credit online course titled "Perspectives on Study Abroad". This course is designed as an introduction to and support of residence and study in another country. Students will learn cultural theories, learning styles, cross-cultural communication skills, and strategies for development of cross-cultural competencies. Students will participate in activities designed to increase their cultural awareness, cross-cultural sensitivity, and own adaptability to another culture. The course will facilitate the intense learning process that occurs when individuals are placed in a new cultural context and will challenge students to explore their own cultural assumptions.

Accommodation and Meals

Students will live in university dormitories with Chinese, American, and other international students. Rooms are double occupancy and each room has its own Western style bathroom and kitchenette. Students will have access to both traditional Chinese foods and Western cuisine. Xi’an International University does have a large cafeteria where students can obtain meals at very affordable prices. The cost of food, however, is NOT included in the price of this semester abroad program so as to allow students the flexibility to eat at locations of their own choosing.

Excursions

As part of the program cost, students will participate in a number of excursions and cultural activities. Some excursions may be available at an additional cost. Possible excursions may include:
  • Terra Cotta Warriors
  • Big Goose Pagoda
Additional Information

In order to participate in this program, participants are required to be College of Lake County students. If students wish to maintain financial aid through Madison College, additional steps are required and students must enroll in a 1-credit course at Madison College. Please contact the Center for International Education for additional information.

All students are required to attend two pre-departure orientations. These orientations provide information on health and safety, packing, trip planning, flight logistics, and other essential information.

Students are accompanied by a visiting U.S. faculty member who provides oversight for the program and assistance to students as needed.

A passport is required for U.S. citizens traveling to China. If you need to apply for a passport, it is advised to allow at least 6 weeks for standard processing.
