Program Overview

Study German language and culture in the heart of Old Europe while earning Madison College credit. Salzburg College, a small liberal arts college, specializes in study abroad education for US students. All classes are taught in English, however the local language of Austria is German. No previous study of German is required, although it is recommended that students have taken at least one semester of German.

Salzburg, surrounded by picturesque mountains, is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. As the birthplace of Mozart and the setting of "The Sound of Music," it has a rich musical heritage that is reflected in a great variety of concerts and other musical events throughout the year. Salzburg is ideally located for travel, with its close proximity to Zurich, Munich, Prague, and Budapest.

Course Information

Semester participants earn between 12-13 credits on the semester program. All students are required to take “Understanding Austria: History, Politics, and Culture” (3 credits) and a German language class (3 credits) at the appropriate level. Students then choose two to three additional courses in the arts, humanities, or business from an
Approved Class List- Salzburg, Austria (provided by ICISP website) or refer to Salzburg College web page. A list of possible courses can be provided by contacting the Center for International Education. Semester students may also be eligible to participate in an Internship option.

Summer participants enroll in up to 7 credits. Courses are selected from an abbreviated list, though Salzburg College reserves the right to cancel any course with fewer than 5 participants.

In addition to the academic courses, Salzburg College also offers specialty courses such as Austrian cuisine, skiing, hiking, biking, and rafting. These courses are offered at an additional cost and may not transfer back as Madison College credit. Please contact the Center for International Education for more details.

All students accepted into a semester-long Study Abroad program are required to take the Madison College one credit online course titled "Perspectives on Study Abroad". This course is designed as an introduction to and support of residence and study in another country. Students will learn cultural theories, learning styles, cross-cultural communication skills, and strategies for development of cross-cultural competencies. Students will participate in activities designed to increase their cultural awareness, cross-cultural sensitivity, and own adaptability to another culture. The course will facilitate the intense learning process that occurs when individuals are placed in a new cultural context and will challenge students to explore their own cultural assumptions.

Accommodations and Meals

In order to provide the best cultural experience possible, students live with an Austrian host family. Housing assignments are based not only on a housing preferences form, but also on interviews with Salzburg College staff. While some students may live within walking distance of Salzburg College, others will have to use public transportation or bike to the school. Students may also choose to live in a dorm. Weekend meals are not provided in the student dorm.

Non-traditional students or married couples are encouraged to request an alternate housing option if they do not feel comfortable with a home-stay. The Salzburg College staff will work with such students to arrange more suitable housing.

All meals, with the exception of some during the excursions, are included in the program fee. Breakfast, dinner, and all weekend meals are provided by the host family, and lunch is served at the school during the week.

Excursions

As part of the program cost, students will experience a number of excursions and cultural activities. Additional excursions may be available for an additional cost. Possible excursions may include:
  • A trip to Germany
  • Vienna
  • The Salzkammergut
Additional Information

A passport and a visa are required for U.S. citizens traveling to Austria. If you need to apply for a passport, it is advised to allow at least 6 weeks for standard processing. Visa processing is free and instructions on how to obtain the visa will be given upon acceptance to the program. Additional visa information is also available here
Salzburg, Austria Visa Information for reference.

All students are required to attend two pre-departure orientations. These orientation sessions provide information on health and safety, packing and trip planning, flight logistics, and other essential information.
